Bringing “In-Class” Online
For the duration of the 2020-21 school year, all Boston Partners mentoring programs will operate remotely – regardless of whether Boston Public Schools students return to physical classrooms later this year. In addition to ensuring the health and safety of our school and mentor communities, we believe this decision will provide students with the most consistent mentoring experience each week – something that becomes even more critical in a school year clouded by uncertainty.
Despite the transition to an online setting, the foundation of Boston Partners’ mentoring programs will remain unchanged. Online programs will adhere to the same core principles as our in-class offerings: meeting students where they are and providing flexibility for volunteers.
Online Mentoring Models
All online mentoring opportunities will operate under two models:
A virtual in-class model, launching in October, will most closely resemble our typical in-person mentoring programs. Teachers will be able to nominate students in need of additional support, and mentors will join those students in their virtual classrooms during the school day each week. In many cases, mentors and students will split into online breakout rooms and work together one-on-one or in small groups. Teachers or other school staff will serve as proctors for the safety and security of all parties.
An independent support model will be made available to students and mentors beginning in November. In this model, students who have self-identified or been identified by their families as benefiting from increased support will be matched with mentors outside of school hours. Once matched, mentors will meet with students on Google Meet for a minimum of one hour per week to review classwork, support student projects, and build skills in the student’s area of need. Proctors will audit the session, cameras off, for the safety and security of all parties.
