Liz Miller, Josiah Quincy Elementary School
For the second year in a row, Liz Miller of Spoonfuls returned to Kelly Keefe’s 5th grade classroom at the Josiah Quincy Elementary School to discuss her work in relation to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Ms. Keefe’s class focuses on the UN goals throughout the year, most recently focusing on the “Zero Hunger” goal. Liz helped contextualize this goal for the students, discussing how Spoonfuls puts their mission of food recovery and redistribution of healthy, fresh food.
Liz also led the students through an activity where they examined “expiration” dates, questioning the confusing differences between “best buy,” “use by,” etc. So what should we do when we’re unsure if food is safe to eat? “Look, smell, taste, don’t waste” – use your senses to figure out whether a food is okay to eat, rather than blindly following the date on the package and risking unnecessary waste.
The visit finished with a student Q&A. Many of the students were focused on how donating and collecting food for food drives and mutual aid is a great way to help reduce food waste in their own homes and communities!
