National Mentoring Month is a time to honor the invaluable relationships that shape our personal and professional lives. This month-long celebration serves as a reminder of the power of guidance, encouragement, and shared wisdom. Mentorship is a timeless concept that transcends generations and professions. It embodies a unique connection between individuals, where knowledge and experience are generously shared. Whether in the workplace, academia, or personal life, mentors play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of their mentees. For over 50 years, BPIE and Boston Public Schools (BPS) have partnered to create steady support systems for students in grades K-12.
This month, on social media, we highlighted several stories from our volunteer academic mentors. All of our mentors share their time and energy with children across Boston to make a difference in their lives. More than 1 in 3 young people in America are growing up without a mentor outside their family; in Boston, 14% of students reported that they “almost never” have someone other than a teacher to speak with when they are hurt, sad, or just need someone to talk to. By growing the mentoring movement, we have a chance to close this mentoring gap and increase young people’s access to supportive, caring adult relationships.
We’re grateful for the dedicated service of the hundreds of BPIE academic mentors who spend their time with BPS students each year.
Thank you for letting us share your stories!
