School Volunteer Program

Boston Partners in Education matches Boston Public School students in grades K-12 with volunteer academic mentors in response to teacher requests.

“My volunteer did much to improve students’ self-esteem and to encourage each child to strive to do his or her best.”
-- Second grade teacher, Lee School

Our School Volunteer Program provides academic mentors to teacher-assigned students, either one-on-one or in small groups. Volunteer academic mentors work with students in reading, writing, and math, helping them to improve their grades and to achieve their goals on standardized tests such as the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS).  In addition to helping students build academic proficiency and test-taking skills, mentors help them to improve their
social and study skills, verbal/speaking skills, self-confidence, and ability to work with other
students.

"The students I worked with really enjoyed the more individual attention that I was able to provide."
-- Volunteer, Agassiz Elementary School

All volunteers are screened according to the guidelines created by Boston Partners in Education for the Boston Public Schools. Volunteers complete an online application, are interviewed, and must complete a one-time training in mentoring and either math or English Language Arts. Criminal  Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks must also be conducted annually for all volunteers.
