Dr. Gary Gottlieb was a Big Cheese today at the James P. Timilty School in Roxbury. Dr. Gottlieb has been CEO of Partners Healthcare since the beginning of this year. A physician and psychiatrist, Dr. Gottlieb has been an advocate for advancing patient care and served as co-chair on Mayor Meninos Task Force to Eliminate Health Disparities. Dr. Gottlieb emphasized to the sixth graders the importance of being bilingual and how it opens up a whole world of understanding. He spoke about how his corporation is in need of more bilingual doctors and nurses. Dr. Gottlieb read the short story "Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto and stressed the importance of learning and career success. He ended by saying that he is sure one day one of those sixth graders will be his boss.
About the Big Cheese Reads Initiative
The Big Cheese Reads is celebrating its sixth year of serving the academic needs of students in the Boston Public School system. Local senior business and community leaders (Big Cheeses) visit a middle school classroom one to two times during the school year to read a short passage and emphasize the important link between literacy and career success. As the nations first leadership-driven academic mentoring campaign, The Big Cheese Reads introduces urban students to today's many different career opportunities. Over the past five years, 5,000 students have met nearly 150 corporate and community leaders that have inspired them to dream big and achieve their goals.
The Big Cheese Reads is a fundraising initiative of Boston Partners in Education. Money raised helps continue to provide quality educational assistance and positive adult role models to our city's school children. For more information, click here.
